Hello Everyone,
I have a 1974 Evinrude 50HP motor. I need help on checking the part #'s for the power packs for this engine. I have found a part# of 581397 which is replaced with a Sierra 18-5755. It says (pack2). Is there a different part # for (pack1)? or do I need to get two of the pack2? Or is this the only power pack on the motor?

I have been experiencing problems with this motor. It was running great for a while. All the sudden it lost power while going down the lake and At WOT it runs equivalent to idle speed. Outside of the water with muffs, it sounds like it is running great. As soon as I put it in the water, it just doesnt have any power for some reason. I have taken the carbs off and cleaned them, tried adjusting the carb needle valves using the direction of previous posts on setting these, checked fuel filter screen, checked hoses. Everything seems fine, just doesn' run. A friend of mine, said his done the same thing and it turned out to be the power packs. Thought I might try that to see if it works. Any Help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much. Mike

You are most ;likely running on only one cylinder. As long as the compression is good on both, it's probably spark.

That's easy enough to verify by unhooking one plug wire at a time.

The problem may also be a coil.

First off identify which cylinder is not firing. After you identify which cylinder, switch the coils and see what happens. If the firing cylinder changes, you have a coil issue.

If it's the same it may be a powerpack. The engine only has one and you have the right part number.

Thank you so much for the information djohns19. I will try the coils first. I had tried taking the plug wire off one at a time and did see the blue spark on both wires. I haven't tried the coils yet but will definitely try that next. Thanks for the information about the power pack also incase that is the problem. Thanks again for your help.
