Howdy All,
So I have been lurking on this forum for some time reading all the different rebuilds and such and got the itch. Went out and bought a 16ft Starcraft and will/am doing a complete gut and restore. I AM A GLUTEN FOR PUNISHMENT!!! Also avid DIYer and love to tinker hence why i am doing all this and not just re powering. Will post up in the restore section once i get further along.

So seeking some assistance, I am doing it a little different in the fact that I started with the motor (Evinrude 1974 70 HP 3 cylinder 2 cycle Model 70773s (Powerhead was replaced apparently)) and did a almost complete overhaul (Only thing I didn't do was redo cylinders since compression was good but did clean heads and everything) and replaced all seals and such and got it fired up first try. So moved on to the tilt trim which was working but the assist ram had a blow out so tore both rams apart and will be replacing all the seals on it and will be good (Harbor freight spanner wrench for $5 worked perfectly). I took the motor/pump apart, will be getting a new motor (172850); however, in me zeal to take everything apart and clean everything i also took the pump (172857) apart..... Let just say that I now have 2 sprockets, 2 springs, 2 balls, a washer, and a brass mushroom bushing (Not sure what to call it) that i am not sure how they are to go back together. I can't find any diagrams on the pump assembly. I don't want to spend the money on the motor and then find out that i missed something on the pump when it exploded on me.... Does anyone have any suggestions/diagrams, or should i just pay the extra 80 bucks and get a new hydraulic power unit with reservoir and modify it to work?

Thanks

No Title

A 70773S is a 1977 model, not a 1974. This image has the part# 172857 (# 95 in the diagram) the valve body and gear cage, so based on that, this is a 1977 image. That # is listed as NLA and when it was it was $425+ fr that part alone. Have you sourced (and priced?) the parts you need to fix the system?

Howdy JB,
Appreciate the quick response. So to answer your questions:

Yes the body is 1974 with the powerhead being changed to a 77.

So I have sourced and priced the motor from (NEW TILT TRIM MOTOR FITS EVINRUDE JOHNSON 172850 173596 6208 18-6767-1 0172655 172655) at $124 and then a new pump that I believe will fit at (Db Electrical TRM8000 Pump Kit For Tilt Trim Motor Omc 75 90 115 120 130 135 & Force Trm8000) at $105. Need to do more research on it. I am hoping that someone has a schematic of the pump itself so i can fix it. The one you have is showing the diagram of the entire assembly (Part 95 (Bottom right) of the diagram). I figured Evinrude/Johnson didn't plan on people taking it apart and just replacing then entire pump. I like doing things the hard way LOL. So figured I would post up and ask the experts on here to see if anyone had a diagram or knew what i was referring to.

Thanks for your assistance

So have an e-mail off to the manufacture of the pump kit to see if it is compatible with the motor i listed. If it is then i have a viable backup to just getting another all in one hydraulic power unit.

I had a similar situation with a dealer installed Prestolite aftermarket TT system on a 1976 55 HP Johnson, I got it all apart and then wasn't sure how to put it back. Google searches for the Prestolite assembly paid off with an assembly blow up drawing. See if you can find a manufacturers stamp and or numbers on the pump anywhere and try that route.Good Luck

Thanks IM, I hadn't thought about it being a Prestolite assembly and just thought it was Evinrude. Will take a look to see what I can find

What got me on that pump was the paper thin gasket. I never found the right material to replace it and it is critical to the clearance on the pump. I ended up taking the pump off and making a bracket to allow for locking the motor either up or down with a pin. The pump is on a shelf, it will go in and out, but wont lift the motor.

I don't think yours is like mine mind you, mine mounted on a bracket outside of the motor. I am just saying to research your manufacturer, if you can find them.

Thanks, so I was able to find a diagram of one of the pumps; however, it is not quite the same..... You can see the two sprockets, 3 balls and one spring. I have two springs, two balls (That i could find...), and some other stuff. So may have to bite the bullet on this one but figured I would give it a shot. Still got plenty of time before i need to make a decision.Pump Diagram.PNG

So found this picture that Sparky15 showed back in 2011 here on iBoats. My pump looks like the one on the left. Getting closer....Sparky15 Pump Pic.PNG

Ok, so posting a lot in my own thread but want to try and combine all of my research into one area, so if someone has similar issue they can use it and not go through all the searching I had to go through. These pictures are from another thread provided by Scaaty back in 07. Looks like I may be searching the garage for additional balls....

If you can find a number anywhere look for a rebuild kit. Measure the balls you have and buy a ball the same size online. I think you're on the right track.

Check local starter and alternator/generator rebuilders, they had some parts for my Prestolite.

Thanks IM, I was able to find all of the balls and such. Hopefully I put the back on correctly. Reading other threads (see pics below), I am 95% comfortable that I put them back correctly. So when it is time, hopefully it will work.... Fingers crossed.... I will post pics of what I did later when I get my camera, but below are the pics that i got from Jiggz, pnwboat and Dancewithme951 in threads from 2014. pnwboat 2014.jpgDancewithme951 pic 1 2014.jpgJiggz Pic 1 2014.jpgJiggz Pic 2 2014.jpgJiggz Pic 3 2014.jpgpnwboat 2014 pic1.jpg

As promised, here is how I lined up what came out of my pump. Also, how I got it back together with some mini Irwin clamps as another set of hands.
