1974 Johnson 50 exhaust leak?

I am suspecting an exhaust leak do to lack of performance and weak idle with the motor hood on....it runs great on the water with it off.......how can I tell if it is an exhaust leak and where it is coming from?....thanks for any help..btw....great website!!!!!!!

Powerhead to mid section gasket. Look here for the part #.
