I`d have to say thats in the ballpark. I saw a brand new never started 71/72 (cant remember now) evinrunde 9.5 with 2 new tanks, motor cover and factory stand that the owner asked what it was worth and i said 500 or better and he thought about the same.

My outboard mecanic who is also an old friend mentioned to me that older outboard motors that have never (or seldom) been started can develop internal rust that would give them a short running life, more so if they were store in a damp environement.

Nevertheless this motor looks so neat I would probably buy it if I wanted a 6 hp motor and fill the piston with furnace heating oil and let it sit for a few days prior to breaking it in gently with double the gas/oil ratio using the best dino 2 cycle oil I could find.

that is one of my concerns.....sure it look mint, but here in nova scotia the salt air takes its toll, id love to have the motor...just because i like old motors. but paying big bucks for a wall hanger is best left to museums. ...it does look nice tho. lol

Perhaps OB's have special protective lubricant injected in pistons prior to be boxed. Donno .. but it's close to 40 years. The other option would be to have it checked by a mecanic prior to purchase I guess.

Or play poker and offer $ 200. LOL

Would surely be a great item for display in a marina shop or a museum, but:

Thirty eight years stored in an uncertain environment would probably make it a big, big project to get her running. Even if there is no corrosion in the cylinders, gearbox and crankcase virtually every piece of rubber, every gasket except the head gasket, both condensors and coils and the water pump might need replacement. The good news is that the rope in the recoil starter is probably okay.

I would therefore second pecheux's suggestion and offer about $200.

Hi OP and all, That's pretty-cool. New /74 in it's box. I'd imagine whatever lube was used in it's final assembly must have dried out at some point during all those years. If the crank and lower unit are moving I'd guess it may be worth the money. Of course the other side is parts availability too. Nice Find just the same.

offered the seller $300, pointing out that the motor would need some $$$$ put into it if was to be used as a runner. i think my offer insulted him!! hopefully someone doesnt buy it , thinking its a new motor, and get dissapointed when the issues arise.

Like JB wrote .. there is a lot of TLC to put on that motor prior to taking it for a afternoon spin on the river ... and when you do go upstream just in case . LOL
