Where is the thermostat on my 1974 85hp Johnson and how difficult is it to replace?

Answering because nobody else has.

Find your engine in the BRP parts catalog at "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e" Look at the diagram for the exhaust housing. Near the top left hand corner you'll see #51 the thermostat housing.

But there are no parts called "themostat" but #48 and #53 are called Vernatherm and Vernatherm valve Must be what it has as a thermostat.

Dont know how easy or difficult it is to get at or what these bits are exactly.

Perhaps someone else will help now.

To expand on what was just said, look for a thick hose coming off the bottom of each cylinder head. Those hoses go to a squarish box--the thermostat housing. Remove the hoses, take out the two screws and remove the thermostat housing. The brass thing you will find inside is the vernatherm -- fancy name for thermostat. There is also a plastic valve in there. And there is a pin in the small end of the vernatherm -- don't lose it.

I'm not sure, but you might have to remove the lower cowling cover to get at the two housing screws. You'll know when you look at it.
