I currently have a 17' Lund aluminum fishing boat with a 1974 Johnson 85hp, the motor runs well but is quite old, I was thinking about getting a newer etec 90 for more reliability, a little more power and increased top end speed. (the boat is rated at 90hp) What do you guys think?

For ease of starting, quietness and reliability I don't think the etec's can be beat. That being said a friend of mine has a 2006 16' Alumacraft with a 06' 90hp etec that he bought new for $16,000+ I have a 1975 Starcraft 16' with a 1975 Evinrude 85hp that was given to me, our rated weights are within 25 lbs, we are rigged almost the same and are using the identical prop. From holeshot to fishing hole he can't catch me and nothing ruins "his" day more. Granted he uses 1/3 the gas that I do and his favorite saying is you don't start an ETEC you turn it on. If your Johnson starts and runs good and you primarily fish inshore lakes it becomes a matter of how much the reliability and fuel saving is worth to you, myself I would run the Johnson till it dies you can buy alot of beer and bait for the price of that ETEC.
