A newbie here with a question. What is the purpose of the bleed/drain system on this motor and is it under pressure or vacuum? I bought a Mercury manual but it doesn't really address this and to find out about that system is why I bought the book. Also, I need to replace the hoses which uses crimp clamps. First, I don't have a crimping tool and secondly, especially on the lower 90 degree L, I couldn't get the crimper in there anyway. Is there something I can use in place of? I thought maybe zip ties but they tend to deteriorate and become brittle/break over time which would matter especially if this is pressurized vs vacuum. Thanks!

Are you referring to the Oil Recirculation System? By the late 60s Mercury had eliminated the Crankcase drains on its engines.

Your motor has a recirculation system.-----The pressure pulse in the bottom cylinder crankcase pumps the oil up to the top bearing.-----Check the check valve and replace the hose.
