My remote control has a toggle under the key. When you bump it the solenoid closes the choke plates. Ran great for our 2 week trip until the last day. Hit the toggle and all is dead. The only thing I did different was to pull the battery and charge it. After I reinstalled the battery I then had this problem.

Back home now. Tested the solenoid with direct 12v and it works fine. So I guess its the switch but there was no sign of weakness at all. Or could it be a short in the harness from the motor to the remote.......????? If so how would I track that down.

What should I do next?

With a volt-meter, check that you have 12v going to the choke switch. If so, check that you have 12v leaving the switch when it is toggled. That will tell you if the switch is okay or not. Let us know what you find.

I'm assuming that the key switch still cranks the engine over?... You didn't say. If it does, then obviously you have 12v being applied to the control box.

Yes the key switch works and the engine starts. I took the motor cover off and moved the rods by hand to get it warmed up. Then didn't need the choke.

I'll pull the cover off the remote tomorrow. Assume I remove the shift arm then the housing bolts and the switch should be accessible. I just assumed these toggles were bullet-proof. Perhaps not.

I'll post back.

If you take off the nut holding the key switch in place, you might be able to access both the key switch and the choke toggle switch connections. (Remove the plate underneath the nut -- faceplate for the keyswitch and the toggle switch.) Worth a try....

[Edit. Drill down to '73 Evinrude 65 (either model listed), select remote control: http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E...b-3e3af514e3a3 ]

Not too hard to open up the housing. I tested the switch and there was 12 volts across it. So I put a jumper cable across the switch terminals and my choke solenoid worked just fine. Fortunately I had a spare donor motor and remote and took the switch from there. My neutral start switch wiring was hanging by a thread and I fixed that too.

Conclusion......its easy to jump into this with guys like you watching over my shoulder.

It a pleasure to look over the shoulder or one who fully understands suggestions and uses logic to trouble shoot.
