The intakes are on the lower unit, grooves on each side. You should see some water coming out of the exhaust ports on the exhaust housing. If you are running on a hose you wil only get water out around the prop. In the water you should get misting out of the exhaust ports.
Your engine does not have a tell-tale, water indicator, but you can install one. Just run a seach, it has been discussed in several posts.

Yes, the ports are the two holes just below the cover in the rear. Those are also ports where the water will come out.

I have never had one of those, but I can't seem to remember seeing anything bad that the engine is prone to. I have installed a tell-tale on every engine I have had that didn't have one, I like to see what the water pump is doing. Preform the normal maintaince and I would think you should be OK.

Your motor - based on model # supplied - is a 1971. If it is running well, enjoy. Many of those motors are still running well today.

Spark and electric shift lower unit are the weak links.

Misting out the exhaust ports at idle - as mentioned - is it's tell tale. They'll pump out much more (out ports) when running on plane.
