Hello, I just purchased a 1975 115 evinrude. It had been sitting for 2 years or so. I changed the spark plugs and started it. It started after a miminual amount of cranking. It ran a little ruff for a bit then it cleared up. But wasn't getting much water out of the discharge. Then after a few minutes an alarm came on and I shut it off. I have researched and cant tell if it has a thermostat or not. Any sugestions on what it may be? Bad water pump?? Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. thank you

That engine has a single thermostat called a vernatherm, located at the rear of the powerhead on the exhaust adapter. If that thermostat sticks shut, it will overheat at idle. An overheat occurs when the powerhead heats up to around 212 degrees. You can tell if the stat opens or not by holding your hand at the back of the midsection, where those two exhaust relief ports are. About a minute after you start the engine (cold), the vernatherm will/should open. When this happens, you will see small water droplets start to form on the palm of your hand. That's about all the water you will see out of that engine. The normal telltale, common on today's engines, did not come out until the 1978 models.

Thank you for the info. Then how do i verify if the water pump is working if there is no water coming out?

If the engine is new to you, some normal preventative maintenance on your part should give you peace of mind when you go boating this summer. I'd replace both the vernatherm and the impeller in the lower unit. Neither item is too expensive and you'll know your cooling system won't strand you when you are in the middle of the lake. It's easy to check the temp on a powerhead with a laser temp gun. If you can't borrow one for a few days, you can rent one at most auto parts stores.
