1975 50HP Evinrude for $500?

going to take a look at this motor tonight. First time buying a boat motor. The guy wasnt specific on whether the price he was asking came with controls etc. He did say its running excellent. Im fairly handy with auto's and motors in general, this is my first venture in marine with a fair understanding of small motors.

Just looking for things to ask or if there are specific things I can identify.


What would a running 50HP (of any brand) go for usually with controls

its like asking how long is a piece of string ? (and how long is not a Chinese bloke)

But seriously the engine is getting a bit old, but if running very good its better than a late non runner.
for that money it needs be pretty good and not too much corrosion evident.
if you can see lots of corrosion then simply walk away as what you see is just a 10th of what is lying underneath.
check for water coming out the tell tale if it has one and do make sure to check compression on both cylinders.
check for oil in the gearbox and colour (cream is bad) if no controls walk away, for that money it should complete with
gear /throttle controls for sure.
