1975 50hp Evinrude - water in cylinder?

My engine starts and runs but does not idle very well. Will die often when putting in forward and especially reverse. Once up to speed seems to run well.

When I take lower spark plug out there always appears to be water droplets on the plug or condensation if you will. I've replaced Head Gasket (2x), Exhaust gaskets and Exhaust manifold gaskets so curious if there's anything else I should check for before I give up on this motor?

I assume the sign of water is a bad thing and maybe a cracked block or cylinder that my untrained eyes cant see...

Thanks in advance for the help! -Andrew

Did you check the cylinder to make sure it was not warped when you had it off?

Andrew,

I once had a 3 cyl Johnson with this same problem and it was caused by a warped head as a result of an overheat caused by eel grass on the water intake.

It does not take long to warp an aluminum head. Have you ever had any overheat issues in the recent past? If so I will bet you have a warped head. Don't keep running this engine or you will score the cyl walls.

Also once you get it fixed, go out and buy a cylinder head temperature gauge. With my Johnson, the alarm horn never sounded early enough in an overheat to protect my engine. Once I put the temp guage in, I never had a problem as I would stop the boat anytime the temp started to climb.

Thanks guys... Appreciate the replies..

I actually sanded the head on a very flat iron surface 400grit (took a long time) so assuming it's pretty flat now based on my checks. I do think the cylinder walls were scored a little too but really don't know where water is getting in.

I don't want to put too much more into this motor but might try tightening head bolts (again), new plugs, Stabil, etc.. Then sell for parts otherwise...

Thanks again!
