I know a little about clutch dogs but not much. I just traded for this 6 hp. Threw an impeller in it because the night before I got it running but no pumping. Got it purring today but when I shift it, it wants to jump out of gear. I even pulled the lower unit back off to check my linkage connection. The second time I put it back together it went in even better. What do I need to do next. I have never had to address this issue. Thanks gentlemen for any help. Mettyfish

Re: 1975 6 hp Evinrude Shift Problem

The cut away portions of the shift rods must align with the threaded holes of the brass shift connector..... Possibly they are out of line somewhat? After aligning them properly and threading the bolt(s) in almost snug, apply a slight bit of pressure so that the rods are snug but not real tight against the threaded bolts, then tighten the bolts securely.

If the unit still jumps out of gear, it's time to drop the skeg in order to inspect the shifter dog and gear lobes.

Re: 1975 6 hp Evinrude Shift Problem

Thanks for that info. The first time I was putting it back together it did not seem like it was quite right but the second time it went back in great. I did not look at the top side of the brass shift linkage connector. The shift lever seems like it is a little farther back towards reverse when setting in neutral. If I hold the shift lever way forward it runs great in gear. Maybe my shift linkage? Is the shift linkage adjustable at all? Thanks, Mark

There is no shift adjustment, only what I mentioned with the brass shift connector.

There's always a possibility of wear and play in the shift linkage under the powerhead on the other end of the shift handle shaft.
