My Johnson has the tilt trim that has the two cylinders outside the transom mounting bracket. The pump and motor are also outside the brackets. I need to rebuild or get some newer cylinders. I have not been able to find a rebuild kit and have not been able to find a pair of used cylinders......I would take either. Anyone know where I might get a rebuild kit or come acorss a pair of used cylinders.......By the way this Johnson is 29 years old and still has 125 lbs of compression on all three cylinders and run like a champ. It has done so for 29 years. I find myself attched to it and even if tilt and trim do not work good anymore I am gonna see that she get to the water and fishes...........

Re: 1975 70HP johnson tilt trim cylinders

I needed the same cylinders for quite awhile and looked hard for "inexpensive" ones to replace them.
I finally found a source that would work from Bimba Mfg. Co, http://www.bimba.com/products/products.htm
Their hydraulic cylinders will only stand up to 500 PSI but thats plenty for the job of lifting/tilting your outboard! you will have to change your hose/line setup a bit to adapt them though. I bought two and used a Mercury type stand-alone pump (found all day on ebay) and hooked them up with HP flexable hose (northern tool) the whole changeover works great! The bimba cylinder will not quite lift the motor as high as the original cylinder (stroke difference/design) but thats fine with me, I have NO complaints. I bought several "used" original cylinders which still gave me problems, so I decided I would end this fight at last! Go and download their product line ".pdf" file and you will find the series "500" hydraulic cylinders there
PS..forgot to say, I used the 1.5" bore cylinders, and you will have to drill and tap the "hex head nuts" that were on your originals to fit the bimba rod ends.........good luck with your project!

Just done mine cylinders were in good condition
but had to make new push rod. Picked up all seals from a hydraulics dealer seals slighty different but works great, made new brushes for motor only thing i didnt do was to bypass internal overload switch which i will do next time it needs new brushes, as it is a pain getting it all back together and put a over load switch in the relay box they are not hard to do except for bleeding what a pain good luck

Flips. :D

The kits you need are PN 174520. 'Bout $13 and some change per kit. Try the link below for them.

http://www.twincityoutboards.com/

Cheaper getting the kits.

Re: 1975 70HP johnson tilt trim cylinders

It appears that with the cost of remaking the unit I will be better off buying a new tilt trim unit that will do the job. Dollar wise it appears that replacement or rebuild is not feasable. Anyone else have any ideas.......?
