I know this queastion has probably been asked alot but i have been reading alot and still havent found it. I just bought this motor started it up and it revs so high you think it is going to blow a gasket. I can choke it down to throw it in gear and it idles low and when you throttle up it bogs down and then takes off but very jittery. I dont have a manual yet but will get one. compression I think was 120. sounds like a carb cleaning and rebuild but just asking advice if it could be something else is the reason for the high idle in neutral.
thanks for any answers

Re: 1975 75hp evinrude hustler high idle

sounds like the carb is not sinked up with the throttle and there is too much gas/air being allowed in at what should be idle check to see if the back butterfly in the carb is closed all the way when the throttle is all the way idled down, if not do a link n sink, basically allowing the throttle roller to open that butterfly with the throttle being opened up. It should close all the way at what should be closed and the follower should be between the two lines on the cam when it is al idle. If none of this makes sense either wait for the manual or go look at the linkages on the carbs and what rotates where when you engage the throttle

Re: 1975 75hp evinrude hustler high idle

thanks. I looked at the carbs last night took them off to do a rebuild and when I took off the linkages I found the upper and lower carbs were about half open when I took the links off they snapped shut. Before, when I had it running, I used the top roller to rev up and I rolled it back thinking it was all the way closed but never thought about it being stopped by being out of sync with the others. I am sure now when I get them back together that was the problem and it will run great.

When you get your manual follow the link and sync instructions to the letter.

Thanks for your help guys. I soaked the carbs in cleaner all night, rebuilt them and synced them last night. I strated it up with the muffs on and it idled and sounded great. I am going to put it in the water tonight and try it out under a load. It sounded like that was the problem tho. could have saved the money on the cleaner and the rebuild probably but I am sure it didnt hurt to do it anyway.:D
