I was wondering if there are any easy fixes for a carb that leaks gas, or if I have to have it rebuilt? any ideas on where the problem could be coming from?

Bad needle and seat, crap in the carb, bad gasket on the bowl drain. Yea you pretty much gotta pull the carb. Might as well do both at the same time.

do you think it's a repair I could do by myself? or do I pretty much need to take it to a mechanic or buy a new carb set?

Very simple! Take lots of pics before, during and after. When removing anything that you are not sure of, ie: idle, jet screws and such, make note of the amount of turns it takes to remove, go slow and take your time. By doing so, you will be alot closer than starting from no where! Hint. just snug tight, no need in trying to kill it!

If its the correct carb kit and you feel ok with it then sure! Go for it! Keep us posted! Yes you will need carb cleaner. Get the gallon size!
