I have a 1975 75hp Johnson Stinger2, it is 20" transom hight. Can someone tell me the difference between the Stinger and Stinger2? I can not find any info for the Stinger2 but have found the brochures for the regular Stinger.

I have seen many arguments over if this motor exsist so I will post pics of it soon

Re: 1975 75hp Stinger2 question

OMC's 3 cyl loopers started as 55 HP in about 1968, and were upped to 60, 65 then 70 HP by the mid 1970's.

The first Stingers were merely regular 70 HP motors with fancy graphics. In 1975, the Stinger actually took on a life of its own. They better tuned it and put on different carbs, plus the top rpm range was increased by 500. At that same time, the std 70 hp was still available.

By the early 1980's they no longer sold the Stinger graphics, though they continued to offer both 70 and 75 hp models.

Some people may have referred to the upgraded 75 HP model as a Stinger 2, (or second generation stinger) but I can find no reference in the OMC literature where they referred to it that way.

Re: 1975 75hp Stinger2 question

The original Stingers were actually V4 racing motors - not available to the general public. The first generation of Stinger 3-cylinder motors were labeled Stinger 2 to differentiate them from the previous 4-cylinder incarnation of the model name. They eventually just dropped the 2 from the graphics and called the 3-holer the Stinger.

Re: 1975 75hp Stinger2 question

Thanks guys, That was very helpful infomation. It seems to be a very good running motor. I am a bit down on compression on the midde cylender but Im hoping it will come back up with a little mystery oil or something. The motor sat for a good while and I think it may have a ring hung up. I have 120 pounds top and bottom cylenders but only around 70 in the middle.

Interesting!

I never raced, so only had access to retail motors. My catalogs show they were offered in 1974, but I can't find any older. So, what was the first year the Stinger was introduced as the "2"

Re: 1975 75hp Stinger2 question

A Stinger 85? Not sure there ever was such an animal. There was a Javelin 85, though in the late 1970s. Much like the 3-cylinder Stingers, it was a "deluxe" model, with special graphics and such. The only V4 Stingers were racing models with no horsepower designation given...

Re: 1975 75hp Stinger2 question

I have a young friend that has a 1975 stinger 2, that worked fine for him last year but this year he got it to fire up twice and it shut down. I looked at it and holding a screw driver in the spark plug wires and about 1/16 inch from the plug while cranking it over , saw no spark. Would that possibly be the points? would a bad ignition cause that? Just thought since you own one you or someone else out there could help. THANKS

Re: 1975 75hp Stinger2 question

Hi, just bought a boat with the same motor on it. Gary is out cleaning the carbs right now (it's been sitting for 2-3 yrs), and we are hoping to get it ready to test on the water next weekend. Is this a 1975 motor?
