1975 85 HP Johnson, black oil dripping from top of foot

I know there is nothing at the top of my foot for any kind of oil to leak from. I know the black oil is from unburned fuel mixture oil from slow running. My question is, how can I prevent this black oil to stop leaking? The motor is on a 24 foot pontoon and we are not into speed, we like to just cruise around slowly from one fishing spot to another. Any suggestions how to stop the black oil.

I do put the motor in neutral and rev it up at times but it isn't enough to stop the black oil.

Never start it again. Oil draining from the exhaust is part of owning a two stroke. The engine does need the occasional high speed run to blow out the accumulated residuals

Check to make sure your thermostat is working. You can run it on standard tcw-3 50-1 oil no need to buy expensive oil. Running a synthetic like XD 100 is a waste of money because when you mix it at 50-1 you are not reducing the oil amount in the motor. So the only difference is the goo running down the side of the motor will cost 3x more than it does now. XD 100 is designed more for a DFI motor than anything so it's just overkill.

Thanks for the information, I will give the oil a try and make heavy runs if possible. The reason I don't like to run fast is it uses more fuel and water is heavily sprayed over the top of the motor. If ran for any period of time the water will drown out the motor. I have tried to stop the water from covering the motor but so far no go.

Thanks again.

Possible that the lower exhaust seal grommet is out of place or missing. When you take the lower off there is a trapezoid shaped rubber grommet that fits in the exhaust opening of the lower unit. This seal is to keep any of the dirty exhaust from coming out onto the lower. It also holds water in the midsection. 1. It's easy to lose this grommet, esp when the water pump is replaced. 2. When the grommet gets old, it distorts with age and is difficult to get back into place during reassembly of the lower to the mid. Some times the grommet will get mashed in-but is actually out of place- when your tighten the lower unit bolts and it will leak. 324937 is the part number in question.

Scott, I just replaced the thermostat a couple of months ago. I have never seen water cover a motor like this one does. I did take the tilt and trim plus the jack plate off my old bass boat and put on the toon.

EM, I did notice that that gasket was out of shape when I changed out the water pump. Thanks for the part number, I appreciate it.

Get rid of the jackplate will serve no purpose on a pontoon put up a pic of the boat and motor you should not be having that problem.

Scott, the reason I put the jack plate on was the motor set to low in the water, the tilt and trim motor was almost under water. I read where the cavitation plate should be about an inch below the floor of the transom mount.

When you are at speed, with your pontoon, have a look at the water streaming from under the engine pod-specifically where the water flow is hitting the engine. The streaming water should hit the engine lower unit, just under the anti-ventilation plate. If the water is streaming above that plate, the engine is mounted too low on the boat. The antiventilation plate will cause a lot of drag. As will be evidenced by tons of water spray coming from the plate being in/under the water.

Thanks EM, I will check that, I got a feeling the motor is still a little too low. I really do appreciate your help.
