I have on my boat a '75 85HP johnson. It is having some issues as detailed in prevous post.

I have a '78 115HP johnson from a friend which is supposed to run, Supposed to!

1. Model 85ESL75E, serial J4314662
is it safe to assume this is 1975 as I'm doing?
how come some part listings have 'crossflow' (I believe it was) in the description?

2. Model 115ETL78C, serial J4983065, again I'm assuming 1978 year.

How much is interchangeable on these? the 115 motor has a verified good working tilt/trim which I don't have on the 85 hp motor, but it hasn't been run in quite a few years although the compression has tested good. Needs a starter though. Trying to figure out what is the best path to go down...

At the moment I would like to steal the ignition coils off the 115 for the 85 but the part listings here at iboat have different OEM reference numbers...seems not likely to me based upon that.

once again thanks in advance for you very valuable help.

take the parts number, got to ishopmarine, and enter them into there search at the top center of there page. and see what they give you as new number for each part. go to the following site, and follow prompts to the engine diagrams & parts list for each motor. get original numbers and enter into ishopsearch. this will tell you if the parts are compatible, if they come up with the same number.

You may be swimming upstream on this one. The base gaskets on the block are different, indicating that the blocks are not directly interchangeable. Another way to compare parts is on the BRP website: epc.brp.com.
