I have recently purchased a boat with a 1975 85hp evinrude that had sat for 15yrs.It has no lowerunit on it,so before I purchased one I wanted to make sure she runs, well I hooked a hose to one of the water tubes, hooked up a battery and fresh fuel and bang she started like she was running all day.I let her run for about 15 minutes and all sounded great, but I thought the idle was a little high,so I backed off on the base timing screw,it came down a little lower,I was happy!! then I went to the throttle goosed it a little and the Idle didn't want to drop back down,I checked all linkages, removed the thottle cable, and even tried retarting the timing more ,but she still runs on ,however I shut down the engine, restarted and she idled untill I goosed it again. Is this normal?? or is there something inside the carbs that could have dried out and are now leaking enough fuel to have an affect like this. Any help would be most appreicated. Thanks Al

Hi, I would guess that the throttle plates in the carburetors are not returning to closed position when you goose it. I belive on that motor there is a little wire connected to the choke mechanism that when you restart it, and hit the choke, the wire pushes in the arm for the throttle plate and closes them. When you goose it, the throttle doesn't return leaving the idle high. :)

al,

An outboard will always idle high when run out of the water, without backpressure on the exhaust.

By messing with the adjustments, you now need to perform a "synch. and link".

I strongly suggest a manual. They are available here on iboats at the lower left corner of the page, or maybe, your library.
