1975 Johnson 85hp, there's a choke solenoid or some electrical part connected to the choke mechanism that appears to be broken. Guy who sold me the boat said it was broken. I've been able to start using manual choke, but not without a lot of trying (too much for any fun). This solenoid also has a linkage to another flapper mechanism deeper in the carb. It opens some spring-loaded flaps behind the main choke flap. Hope this makes sense. But the little metal arm that makes up that second linkage is physically disconnected, perhaps missing a connective device like a grommet or something.

What are those additional spring-loaded flaps deeper in the carbs, and what position should they be in for starting?

Also, when spraying pre-mixed fuel into the carbs to start, I've been manually opening up the choke to assure the mix gets into the carbs. Should I manually open those additional flaps as well, or leave them closed when spraying fuel mix? Spring keeps them closed by default - but not sure if this is right since the linkage bar to the choke mechanism is not connected; not sure how it should be set up or how it is supposed to work exactly.

Finally, if I'm really having a hell of a time trying to start, can I (should I) remove one or more spark plugs & spray pre-mixed fuel directly into the spark plug holes? What would be the pros/cons of such a step?

Thanks!

Also checked the spark plugs (swapped them for new ones, gapped at .030), but I don't know what a "fouled plug" actually looks like. Can someone give me a description of what a fouled plug looks like (or picture) and what a good plug should look like?

If I am understanding you correctly, there are two sets of butterfly valves in your carbs, The front set is your choke butterflies. The back set is your throttle. If you hold the choke open and move your throttle back and forth, you should see the back butterlies opening and closing. The two sets of butterflies are connected on the bottom carb via a linkage. But the choke does not control the back butterflies, it is just the opposite. If you have the choke on (front butterflies closed) and start to throttle up, the opening of the throttle butterflies will also force the choke butterflies open.

Check this link out http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=76bda0ad0b1fbdb8d479ecbcef891b74 Find you engine date and model and then go to the Intake Manifold section to view the parts.
You will find that part #30 is the link you will need. This plugs into grommets Part #29 (little plastic pieces that pop into the carb and choke linkage plates). You just press these in and the the metal linkage just pops right in to these. It is fixed in the front (Choke) link and slides in the back (throttle) link.

This is the only photo I have with me that shows the linkage on my engine. Mine is a 1975 135HP but I believe it is the same setup.

Unfortunately the link you are interested is partially cut off on the bottom. You can't see where the link plugs into the choke but you can see how it connects on to the lower carb's throttle plate. It just snaps into the black clip so that it slides back and forth.

In the foreground you can see the choke setup. You can also buy a replacement choke or just the parts for it at the same site I gave you. Can be pricey. The cost of just the little spring will surprise you.
