Re: 1975 85hp sticky grease looking stuff coming from the stator
Here's what Mr. Joe Reeves haz to say.

Posted by Joe Reeves (Member # 6826) on October 12, 2002, 11:24 AM:

Rock..... With no intentions of stepping on anyones toes, I strongly recommend that you replace that melting stator. I assume that it is the 35amp type which has a tendency of running extremely hot, and unfortunately a repeat (in time) of the melt down will take place due to the extreme heat generated.

The stator serves two functions... one of which is of course to provide AC voltage to the rectifier which converts the AC to DC in order to charge the battery.

The other function being (two of the large black coils) to supply 300v AC to the powerpack(s).

The melt down always affects the large black coils. This results in a voltage drop to the powerpack(s) which in turn results in faulty, erratic or non existent ignition. Erratic ignition will result in piston and cylinder wall damage.

Be sure to torque that flywheel nut properly, 35amp=145 foot pounds, lesser amp=105 foot pounds. Good luck.......

The biggest problem you'll have, and it ain't all that bad if you've got the right tools, is pulling the flywheel. Do a search, there's plenty of discussion about pulling flywheels. I'd get a manual first though.

c/6

Hooty
