problems with shifting, once in gear cannot get back in netural. cannot get back to netural to start. any ideas

sounds like a worn shift dog but have you checked the lower unit oil ?

yes the oil is clean, no waterpump problems

I had that problem with a 9.5 johnson and it was the idle screw stop hitting the shift linkage I dont know if our motors are built the same. hope to be a help, Jim

Okam....is your throttle retarded back to idle setting? There is a mechanical stop that will not let you shift if the throttle setting is above cold start setting. Won't let you shift back to neutral if the throttle is wide open.
