First of all - thanks to eurolarva for the help. Looks like my solenoid is bad - ordered one today, and bought a new ignition switch just to be safe. Question on the switch - would the terminal indicating magneto use the purple wire I have that is lised generator on the engine? Also - should the black ground wire I have attach to the switch anywhere? Thanks again for all the help - the message board is a wonderful thing!!!

The purple wire normally is used for an external tach. It normally goes to the rectifier which your motor may not have. Check where the purple wire is attached on the terminal strip. Follow where it is attached and see if it goes anywhere in the motor. I believe the rectifier would be on the port side somewhere around the starter solinoid. If There is just a single purple wire and nothing else attached to the post then your motor does not have a rectifer and does not have a charging system

The black wire connected to the ignition switch under the dash is for instruments like a tach and a speedometer. If you dont have these it is usually just hanging there un attached.

Here is the best way to test the solinoid. Use a battery charger with a minimum 6 amp charging capacitiy. The ground on the solinoid is the body that attaches to the motor. With battery charger off there should be infinate ohms or a digital meter will read 0L which means zero load. When you plug the battery charger in the ohm meter should go down somewhere around zero ohms or read something like 0.4. This means the solinoid is good. Attached is a picture of how to wire it.

If you are sure it is the solinoid I would not get another ignition switch. Seems to me they are pretty pricy. If you do when the parts come in only do the solinoid and then test it. Only do one new thing at a time to make your troubleshooting easier.
I bought a ignotion switch "push to choke" at my local boat dealer for $20 -- It was a no name made for a merc push to choke -- it had the same pins on the back as mine with all the same letters-- worked fine

Ordered both an ignition switch and a solenoid for $20 each. The purple wire is connected to "generator" on the block, and I do have a rectifier which was replaced last year. So should that purple wire go to the magneto connection on the ignition? I have a white wire that says "tach". I'm pretty sure it is the solenoid, which I will replace first, but the ignition is as old as the 67 Seaswirl, and has some questionalble connections so I will replace it too. Thanks again!
