Got the engine running great 130 psi all cyl. Problem is just burned up my 3rd starter. First one was original, second one the store said they are making them cheap now and replaced free of charge. Now that one is toast. I heard the bendix not engaging the flywheel properly, Keept trying to start it then nothing (I think the 2nd one showed signes of the same thing on the bendix). I don't see how you can adjust the distance the starter is from the flywheel. So what could be causing this. I have no reason to belive the flywheel is incorrect. and the ring gear looks to be in great shape. Is it possible I am getting a starter with the wrong bendix? (everytime). I am going to take it appart I think the brush is locked up. Turn the key and nothing happens now.
So far
I have replaced the stator, rectifier, and 3 starters. need to order a power pac. and then go ahead an replace the impeller. Although its cooling ok and spitting water it would still be a good idea.
FIRST I NEED TO FIX THIS STARTER. I WANT TO FISH.

I was at the time although I may have cooked it. I am going to check in just a min. The first problem is the bendix and the second is why is it cooking starters. More in a few min.
OH. the first nut on the starter side of the post for the cable (not the nut that holds the cable on) was loose but tightening it did not help.

This is just a shot in the dark but I have found that a bad ground cable with will cook a starter.

Grounds are good and have been working before this. (rechecked anyway).
note: bendix is not stuck in the engage mode. and no evidence of it on the back side of all the teeth.
note: by looks of the starter magnets COOKED. Why Why Why. I think it is because I am not getting a good contact with the fly wheel. Thus binding the bendix. I did look at the starter mount when I took this one off. and I think when I put the new one back on I will put a washer under the bottom bolt which will lean the bendix more toward the flywheel.

Evinrude 135 Bad Starter
Evinrude 18 tore down for rebuild
Volvo Penta AQ125 Rebuilt have not started it. Coolant line needs replacement.
Still on the same wife.

FIXED!!!!!!
The fourth new starter did the same thing Just would not supply enought torq to spin the flywheel. All cables LOOKED good with shinny ends and no rust. Got frustrated and went to the autosupply store purchased 2 - 6' 2 gauge copper wire and 4 copper ends. Used a swage it tool and did a factory crimp on the new wire. Removed the old wires and installed the new WOW does it ever spin now. SOOO. DON"T trust how the wire looks. You can't see internal corrosion. When it doubt just repace them. Cost 1.99 per foot and $1.50 ea for the eyed ends.
Thanks for all the help guys. Now on to the rpm problem while on the water.

For future reference.... When encountering electric starter problems, slow cranking etc.... a internally corroded cable or any other type of cable problem (loose or tight but dirty connection, etc) will result in a very hot cable. Just run your hand down that cable and if there's a problem with it, you'll run right into it right quick.

I was thinking you could have started with new ends on the old cables (if you had the length). That usually gets rid of the corroded bits. Still, nothing beats the feeling of new and clean.
