Hello all

I'm currently in somewhat of a bind and could use some guidance. Anyone know where I might be able to find a long shaft lower unit for a 1975 OMC 25? I have a Lowe 1467 and the transom is just a little too high for my old motor. I've looked locally around New Orleans in one of the biggest boat part yards we have available and came away with nothing. Thanks in advance for ANY help!

An aftermarket tilt and trim unit might be another option. Would need to check specs (setback and mounting on your transom) -- might be able to use your current shaft length. Think the smaller Panther version might hold the 25 -- cost? Your call (get t. and t., and avoid cost for the longer shaft).

Wow, you guys are fast! I will look into all those options provided. Was not aware of this panther tilt and trim device that was mentioned. Thanks again!

Peter, where is the parts yard you're referring to. I live near you and am curious to check it out. There's a guy on Craigslist with a 25hp. Not sure of the year but maybe it has an extension.

I stopped at the Boat Yard in Marrero on the Westbank. They have alot of stuff but I didn't have much luck on the last venture.

A tilt and trim won't help you much because you will have to mount it 5" lower on the transom. I don't think the tiller will clear the top of the transom as the motor will be 5" lower. To make your motor work as is you would have to cut the transom down 5".

need the specs for the t. and t. unit. Mine has a 7" setback -- if the motor clears, could mount the t and t unit lower on the transom (for the 15" shaft). Can also increase the setback fairly easily.

A parts motor is the best bet other than trying to Frankenstein something on the back of the boat. If you want to do something get an adjustable jack plate they are designed to lower motors and cheaper.Or you could sell your motor and find a longshaft motor or cut your transom down. I laso think if you do any of those you will have tiller problems.

...or another hull, with the existing motor. Always options.

The Panther or CMC units are removable/reusable, and stable -- not exactly Frankenstein stuff. But they are expensive. And one would need measurements and specs. to see if it was workable -- among them exact transom height of the hull, and actual shaft length of the 25, along with clearance data.

But you are probably right. Parts and donor motors are a good way to go.
