Hi,

I have a 1975 25hp Evinrude outboard. Would it be safe to say that if my motor pops out of gear while I am going that the forward gear and/or clutch dog is worn out and needs to be replaced.
Also, I have noticed that a small amount of water have reached the lower unit, I plan on dropping the lower end to inspect. I have found no shavings luckily.

When you remove the lower unit, What are some things to look for on the gears to correctly diagnose a bad gear/dog.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks!!

Tom....if it feels like your hitting a log when it jumps outta gear, the lobes on the gear/clutch dog are worn out. The lobes should be sharp with just a slight chamfer. If they are rounded over, they are done.

Keep us posted on your progress.
