I ordered a new water pump impeller for my 40 hp 1975 Evinrude 40555C,
part number 386165, which I obtained from BRP Online parts catalog.
The impeller I received, with the 386165 part number, is 1/4" thinner than
the old impeller.
Every 40 hp for 1975, 1974, and 1976, shows the same part number
for the impeller.

Any suggestions?

How do I figure out what to order?????

Thanks, Tom

How does it fit into the housing, maybe some one installed the wrong impeller before.

I had installed the impeller, not realizing it was 1/4" thinner than the old one. The paddles are
about 1/4" longer than the old one, but the old impeller was well worn. It was a bugger
getting the impeller in the pump casing. The paddles were pretter crowded, but did
not bind, so I tied it. When I got it all together, I tested it in a barrel, and it started
spitting some water out the water outlet, but then quit after 30 seconds.
Took it apart the next day, then noticed how much thinner the new impeller was.
The impeller can slide on the key 1/4" off the bottom of the impeller plate......
no wonder it would not pump!
Did Evinrude make a optional water pump, i.e., extra capacity, or for salt water, etc.,
that I might have, or did the vendor send me the wrong impeller?
Anyone have a 386165 impeller to measure who thick it is?
Thanks for any help, Tom

I am not sure about an optional water pump, do you have a local dealer that you can compare the impellers. It does sound like you have the wrong impeller.
I don't have one of that number to measure for you.
