I have a 1975 70hp Evinrude. I was out on the water fishing. The motor was running great no problems, I used the motor to move too about two or three places. I was going to a forth place and while in route, my motor just quit. I heard some clanking and the motor died. It turns over but it didn?t seem like it wants to start. I removed the spark plugs and they were full of fuel as well as the cylinders. So I'm assuming I am not getting any spark. Now I don't know anything about outboards, but I do work on cars. Does anyone know why this motor would just stop sparking or the components that causes the spark.

I just checked to see if I had spark, I remove all the spark plugs and I do have spark. But as I was checking for spark by turning over the motor, the motor kept turning over on its own with the switch off. The starter would not disengage. I could not stop the motor until I disconnected the battery cable. Is this a switch issue, can a bad switch stop the motor from running. As I think about it, while I was on the water today, I was starting the motor the motor started, the starter did disengaged but it kept running. Does anyone know what this could be.

Check the starter solenoid, sounds like it might be sticking.
Any one of the ign componets can fail at any time, usually at the worst time.

Up date, I found a wire fryed and grounding itself out. I got the motor running, but now its back firing and it hard to stay runnning. I believe the crabs are getting to much gas. I see gas dripping from the crabs into the bottom of the engine pan. The issue is the motor is back firing and hard to keep running. While running, I see see a great deal of smoke out of the back of the motor. I got fresh gas just made it last night. Could the smoke be from not mixing the oil and gas right. I tryed to mix 50:1, could it be I have to much oil and it causing that smoke and cause the engine to spit and smoke.

Another update, I found that the recitifier had one wires that lost a great deal of its incellation. It looked as if bear wire was touching the metal case outside of the recitifier. Could this cause my issues.

unplug your big red plug, this takes the forward controls out of the equation. now jump the starter solenoid, if it sticks, replace, if it works correctly. plug harness back in and try the key switch, if it then sticks, replace the ignition switch. also check your spark and compression with testers.

Ok, I found out that my battery was not fully charged and would not retract the starter. Thats why it would not start. I did find a uncovered wire from the recitifier. I don't believe I mixed the oil and gas correctly. I tried to mix the gas in a 50:1 ratio. Can anyone tell me how would a motor react with too much oil and not enough gas or too much gas and not enough oil.

Thanks mav,

Tashasdaddy, can you please tell me where does the ignition kill cable (black cable with yellow stripe) goes connected to on a 1995 150-hp Johnson?

I am having the same problem on my motor, and when I tried to start the motor today, the ignition switch started to smoke and when I inspected it, the ignition kill cable right at the switch was fried, totally burned.

Do you think this problem was caused due to a bad ignition switch or the ignition kill cabel could be grounded right at the motor to where it connects to.

Thanks in advance for your help.
