Hello, I am a new member to the forums. I just bought a 1974 Chrysler tri-hull with a 1975 evinrude 75 hustler from a friend for pennies and I now am in the process of rebuilding it from the stringers up. I have been reading forums on this site for some time now and decided I might finally have some questions that haven't already been answered.

I've fired up the engine on this old beast and she purrs like a kitten, but I am having some problems with the power tilt and trim. I think the ground wire in the motor wore through on one of the brush connections and shorted. I replaced the circuit breaker assembly, but I still can't get the trim to go up or down. I think when the wire shorted, it probably fried the brushes as well. Does anyone know the replacement part number for these brushes. The model of the power trim is 135443B but when I look up the microfiche, on the diagram it has another motor to the right and it gives the replacement part number to those brushes. Am I right in thinking that this other motor is a replacement motor to the oem motor and the brushes for the replacement motor will work on the oem motor.

I thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Re: 1975 Evinrude power tilt and trim question

The PT&T units were sold with two different pumps, one made by Calco and the other by Prestolite; the parts are not interchangeable.

On the parts listing items 72-88 are for the Calco pump and items 89 through 103 are for Prestolite. The easiest way to tell the difference is by the shape of the reservoirs, parts 81 and 95 respectively.

That's what I was afraid of. The drawing shows that the brush assembly for the calco pump motor is an unavailable part. Can you still buy the brush kits for this pump motor, or is there a generic brush kit available, or am I just up the creek here.

You are not exactly up the creek, because there is a company that specializes in rebuilding the Calco pumps with a new motor. http://www.apimarine.com

Arco makes replacement pumps and you often see new aftermarket pumps on Ebay.

Re: 1975 Evinrude power tilt and trim question

alright so I looked through these catalogs on apimarine.com and I see the replacement motors, but all I need are the brushes that are inside the motor. The windings are fine and the motor spins great, but the brushes were cooked by the electrical surge. I find it hard to believe that I would have to buy a brand new pump motor because the brushes, which are a soft not a hard part, are cooked. There has to be some kind of generic brush I can put in this motor. If I bought this pump motor I would spend three times as much on it as I did buying hte boat.

I found this brush replacement kit number BR 36S on apimarine that says it is a brush replacment kit for Johnson O/B starter motors, but one set of the brushes looks like it will work in this pump motor. Sorry If I'm being a bother, but there has to be a solution besides spending 400 dollars for a new pump motor. Anybody have any slternative suggestions.

It's not a replacement - they rebuild yours. Call and talk to them.

You might also check sea-way.com in Seattle - they may have something, but call them or use the form. http://www.sea-way.com/orderform.htm

I just finished up with my tnt rebuild on my 74 135489 b brushes from a dealear may be hard to find It took me about 2 weeks to find a calco pump seal kit and cylinder seals as for your brushes you should be able to take it down to a local starter/altinator rebuild shop and they should be able to fix you up they are just a standard size brush may be your best bet

that's what I just was hoping to do. I thank you guys for all your help. I'm hoping that an alternator/starter guy that I know can hook me up. I'm going to try him today.
