Ok, so I have a 1975 evinrude 75 Hp engine that idles fine, and at low RPMs works fine. but when you rev it up to plane at the very high end of the rpms it develops a miss. If I babysit it and slowly feather it up, and I do mean slowly, I can get it to climb all the way up to its high RPM. Once its there, its bulletproof. If you don't let the throttle drop to where the boat falls off plane, it won't develop the miss.

Now, I can test it in the driveway with a test prop on it, and it works perfect. But once it has a real prop on it in the lake under a heavier load it develops this problem. I started reading and it sounds like maybe the rectifier is causing this issue because once its under a load with an improperly working rectifier when you go for the high RPMs the spark plug with the most resistance will stop firing because the motor is trying to run it off the battery.

So, I tested my regulator according to my manual and J. Reeves way of doing it both, and it failed both tests. not to mention that the red lead on the rectifier's shielding is flaking off and the wire is discolored, like it got hot or something. So, due to the bare wire I am replacing it whether its the issue or not.

My questions are: Has anybody ran into this problem before, where a bad rectifier causes a miss at high Rpms? It's almost like the spark plug drops due to the resistance issue and I lose a piston. And two, What could have caused this? I know I didn't do it because according to the manual when these rectifiers go it will take the tachometer to, and the guy I bought the boat from said that the tachometer mysteriously stopped working one day.

Any info would be appreciated.
