I have a 1975 E-Rude tiller
Model#25553B
Serial #E0002586.

My trouble is simple: some muton head over tightened the #2 spark plug now that cylinder is not holding compression. Solution is simple right just install Helicoil. Well I do have the luxury of a full machine shop at my disposal but I have never bought a Helicoil. What size do I need to accomadate the champion plug J6C. Also is there a chance the stainless steel may overheat and cause pre-mature combustion? Is there a better solution than the Helicoil? I understand that this is the popular method of thread repair.

Please just help, Duck season in Michigan is not that far off and well my back up motor is a 1.2HP Eska looks kina silly clamped to my 16foot boat blind.

The Helicoil will work fine no problems.

yes, helicoils are the thing for this. I looked into getting a helicoil kit to fix a stripped hole in the block that the starter mounts in. I was disappointed how expensive the helicoil stuff is to buy! It's not just the insert, I would've needed a special tap, installation tool, and tang "break off" tool. A kit for a single size was ~$50 here. Maybe they sell special "spark plug" hole kits for less (?). For one hole it might be cheaper for you to just take the motor to a shop and ask them to do it. You'd pay for the insert & labour, but not for the rest of the tools. They might quote you a price over the phone.

If you go ahead with it yourself, do a search on iboats... i've seen people post tricks about how to do it with the motor intact and keep all the filings from falling into the motor.

good luck.

Brent
