HI, well I just purchased a used 1975 Glastron CVX 16, and I'm also a new member too...what a great place to start with new beginnings
I purchased this boat and trailer on Sunday, for $ 320.00. I have always wanted one of these Glastrons of the 70s. I know it's a basket case at this point, however I feel that I can at least put the basket back together, maybe not to original condition but usable and enjoyable. I think that the CVX 16 plate may not be original to the boat, but not sure and, I'm doing a lot of searching and, reading on this year model
I would appreciate any info and, input good or bad...hear are some pics

You can use the IMG Code to paste your pics directly into your post. It is the preferred method.

This looks about like where I started, looking forward to your progress! Is that gelcoat or paint?

I think it's paint over original gelcoat, I think it's a mess. I really don't have the funds to do a classic original restore, however I will do the best I can and customize where I can

I really don't know the model of this boat. I do have the title in hand, list all the information except for the model. I do see the manufacturer is Glastron-Carlson

I think this was a basic model? but will have to do more research on the vin number

lots of searching to do...

thanks for the input:)

It is in fact a CV16, not a CVX. You can tell by the transom. Been painted, as that's not an origional color. Would be metal flake. Regardless it's a cool boat & worth restoring imo. Run mid 50's with a 115, upper 50's with a 140.

As someone suggested check out Classic Glastron, or better yet CGOAMN.com. Guy over there is doing a transom/stringer resto on a CV16 as we speak.

edit. Fwiw the hulls are basically the same, just with a fancier deck on the CVX. One major difference however is the CVX has a ~6" "pad" on the bottom, making it faster'n more stable.

Re: 1975 Glastron CVX 16

thanks for all the great info, folks! I appreciate it!... and I feel like this boat is worth building and looks cool also. I found out it has a great heritage of racing experience behind the hull design

I am checking out all the info I can get my pc onto, lol

now I have a question, what is this pad you talk about?

and I have replaced a transom on an old Glastron I used to have, however I did this from the inside, I see a lot of boats being separated apart top from bottom. I'm not sure if I want to go this route, any thoughts on this
thanks!

My guess is you won't have any choice on separating the hull. Usually you have to in order to replace the transom, but you might be lucky enough to get by without separating it. I did mine without separating it, but I used seacast, which I poured in a damaged spot in the topside of the transom. I also flipped it upside down and put it on saw horses, which made installing the inner skin much easier. I think if I was doing it in wood, I would split the hull.

I appreciate your input, and started to remove some rotten transom wood, down to some good wood, and it started raining, so I'm going to keep going forward with my plan to do this from the inside, but you never know which way I'll go once I get the rotted wood out
just going to take time either way

this sounds a little weird, but I found removing the transom was much easier on mine with the hull upside down on saw horses. with it upside down, I just sat on a stool under it, instead of having to lay on my back / stomach.

Re: 1975 Glastron CVX 16

thought I would update my progress or what I think is progress, however i have run into a road block, I have removed the crappy fiberglass filled in dash, and rub rail, only to find rivets! lots of rivets!! behind the rub rail. I drilled all the heads off however the cap and hull will not separate from each other.

I also have discovered that the two sections are glassed together and that presents a different challenge for me. I want to know if it is still possible to dig out all the rotted transom and replace from the inside?

the transom has an odd concave shape to it about 2' each side from center flat motor mounting area. if I have to remove the cap from hull, how will I do this?...thanks for all the input and advice, here are some pics

Yes, some Glastron's have the inside of the hull/cap joint (mine did) glassed over.

Not familiar w/ how the transom's installed in an OB CVX. But an OB usually has the transom ply running up inside of the fiberglass:

Under that piece of aluminum trim, behind all that white carp all over the exterior hull.

Might remove the splashwell portion of the cap only to access the transom wood, similar to this:

Different style of boat then yours, but I think you can see how the splashwell was cut off the boat at the gunwale.

thank you for the input, not sure I want to cut out the splash well just yet, howerer I have thought about it, and have the tools to do so
jbcurt00 you mentioned your cv16 was glassed the same as mine? did you cut the glass to split the hull, if so how was that done

Re: 1975 Glastron CVX 16

Not a CVX, it's a 1960 Glastron FireFlite, but yes I had to go around & unbury the captive nuts on the inside of the hull, holding on my rubrail:
Rubrailbolt.jpg
EDIT pt1: That's the hull/cap inside seam, and the arrows point to the buried bolt ends & captive nuts beneath the fiberglass.
Once the rubrail was off, there were a few screws holding the cap & hull together, but the entire interior seam had to be cut. I used a multi-tool:
Multitool.jpg

I tried to be very careful, and the multi-tool isn't very aggressive. Still sliced thru the hull. Cap too....

EDIT pt2: Not sure why, but it looks like you double posted your last reply.... Just use the edit button at the bottom of 1 of the windows & change your post. New pix, text or both. You can cut & paste in your post just like in Word. When you've changed the text, click 'Save'. An edit line will show up at the bottom of your post indicating you've edited the content. Just like it has mine. To make the changes clear, I indicate them w/ EDIT: like I did above. The other option is to notify a MOD & have them delete the extra copy.
