Re: Hello iboaters! 2nd boat, 1st resto
Fred,
Just wanted to drop in and say hello... Cool boat you have, there... Its your boat and you can certainly rebuild it the way you want to... That being said, I agree with others that you are at a real "fork in the road" here... On the one hand, converting from an OMC to a more modern set-up (Merc or Volvo) is a real, time-consuming pain the butt. If you aren't going to to a total, gut job rebuild (just some lipstick) that you can might can mate up some decent power to that stringer and be on your way to enjoy the boat for a few seasons... However, if the OMC craps out on you, parts and replacements are going to be harder to come by (and more expensive). Also, the OMCs are a bit archaic, as the trim motor goes out a lot, and you can't drive the boat except with the drive in the fully "down" position (because of the ball gear set-up as opposed to a universal joint found in the newer models). This can make shallow water navigation a bit tough...
Now, that said, if you want this boat for a long time, you may want to consider the conversion.... Of course, that requires you to re-build your transom and at least the engine mount portion of your boat. You will be putting way more money and time into the boat than it will ever be worth... So, its really only feasible to do that if you have a sentimental attachment to the boat or you are just in love with it. If you are up for a huge project, a merc set-up is not that expensive to come by... I have never really come clean on what I paid for mine, but I bought a wrecked 1996 starcraft with a 350 mag and a alpa 1, gen II outdrive that are in real good shape for 1800 bucks. I just sold the trailer for 300 this morning (so I'm down to 1500). I will probably sell the gas tank, the gauages, the switch panel and some other hardware and knock off a few more hundred. So, I have a modern engine and drive for about 1200 bucks (cheaper than you are planning on buying just the block). Just give it some thought and make up your mind for sure on the power situation before you start your rebuild.
Hope this helps,
