1975 Johnny 135 with remote control. Recently it has been very difficult to shift into reverse or forward. I hear a grinding noise at the motor and feel it at the handle of the remote control. If you give it lots of throttle, it will grind horribly and not move. I managed to get back to the dock by multiple attempts at forward throttle very slowly and it will eventually grab. Once underway, full throttle does not seem to effect it. I have an origional Johnson service manual, but skiming throuh the remote section is not relating my symptions with any specific problem.

Do I need new cables? Thanks.

disconnect the shift cable at the engine, now try shifting it manually. if it shifts ok you need a new cable. if not it is in the lower unit. you will have to have someone turn the prop as you shift so the gears can mesh, when shifting you want to go from neutral to forward swiftly, not slowly, the same neutral to reverse. never shift when the engine is above 800 rpms as this will damage the gear case.

In addition to checking the control and shifting linkage, be sure to check the oil in the lower unit for metal shavings. Grinding horribly very well might mean damaged horribly from all the grinding.

With the shift cable disconnected at the engine, and with the engine running, you should be able to shift back, and forth very easily with just light finger pressure at the engine shift control arm. This engine has hydraulic assist with the shift mechanism. The trouble could be there, but also make the other check's. Gear oil, etc.
