I have a 40 HP johnson 1975, i bought it with a toasted lower unit. When i took it off, it came off, but without the driveshaft! I used penetrating oil sprayed up on shaft. used pipe wrenches on end of shaft, stood on them, then beat them with sleghammer... To no avail. Driveshaft is STUCK! Any ideas on how to get it out? I have a new lower unit, with shaft & once i get stuck one out, just bolt in new one & im back in the water....HELP!

Turn it upside down (it won't hurt anything) and then leach some PB Blaster down the shaft. Do this a couple of times a day for several days Then with a regular claw hammer give the shaft a couple of sideways wacks, just hard enough to vibrate the shaft sorta like it was a tuning fork. If that doesn't get the shaft out then you'll probable have to pull the powr head and resort to heat on the shaft very near the bottom of the powerhead.

Ive been spraying the PB Blaster up onto the shaft end, can says it "travels upwards" I will have to try it with engine off then. What about the seals? if i resort to heat, will the heat damage any seals at crank end?

Just depends on how hot you get things. If you apply heat to the driveshaft only and no indirect torch heat hits the bearing housing then you probably won't burn any seals. The ceals are on the crankshaft end and the driveshafy slip into splines on the crankshaft.

Well, I have the motor off & upside down. Really soaked the shaft with the PB. Will give it a swat with the hammer tomorrow & see if it gives. Thanks for helping me Walker. This site has helped me out so much already, just from reading the Q & A's here. I will be on this site quite often from now on. Just to learn. Once again, thanks.<br />-Scott-

Re: 1975 Johnson 40HP stuck driveshaft

My motor has been upside down for two weeks now. Ive used enough PB Blaster to derust the Titanic.... But my driveshaft won't budge...Im really not liking the idea of dissasembling the powerhead from the rest of the unit. Is there any way I can somehow clamp something to the driveshaft and with blocks on the exhaust housing, somehow pry the stuborn thing up? I can't believe the thing is in there like this, It's like its welded! UG..... :-(
