Hello all,

Here is a picture of my outboard and the trim motor.

EngineWTrimMotor.jpg

With the boat out of the water the outboard trims up and down, however I have noticed that the motor runs for a second or two before the outboard will trim up. When the boat is in the water and under power the outboard will not trim at all in the up direction. I am a novice to power trim but do however understand the principles of hydraulics. So my questions are:

1. Could this be a lack of fluid causing these issues?

2. Where do I check the fluid?

3. What kind of fluid do I use to fill?

Thanks,

You can see the fill plug in your pic just below the mtr. You can use Dextron II ATF fluid. That unit looks like tilt only. Will it tilt up at slow speeds ??

I haven't really tried it a lower speeds. I didn't know that there was some units that are tilt only. How do you tell the difference between tilt only and trim and tilt?

The 1976 power trim units have a very visible, large metal lift bracket which is bolted to the swivel bracket in the midsection. A trim cylinder on each side supports that bracket. It's hard to see in your picture, but I don't see that lift bracket or the two trim cyls. Possible that the unit you have on that engine is a tilt assist only system. If so, it won't raise the engine when under power. You can compare the parts with the factory parts diagram at this website: epc.brp.com. You will want to go the the OB Accessories tab, then to 1976, then to the Power Tilt tab. Compare that diagram with what is on your engine.

Thanks for the replies. I will investigate it further and post up a pic of the whole assembly so that we will all know what I have here.

Thanks again,
