1975 johnson 85hp warm up leaver

My warm-up lever stays up after advancing and then retarding the throttles. Any ideas hoe to fix this.

Your cable is probably mis-adjusted and too tight.

I will give it a try. when adjusting the cables, I am supposes to set the cables in the control first and the do the adjustments on the engine side?

There's no setting at the controls. Put the controls at idle neutral. Disconnect the cable at the engine and manually return the throttle to the throttle-stop. Adjust the cable trunnion so that the cable length matches up to the connection point.
