1975-merc-120hp-i/o-outbaord coupler problem?

Hi,1st time boater, purchased 1975 16 ftGalaxy Ski w /mentioned powerplant,seller said this was problem w/boat,(o/b coupler) said he replaced it 2 yrs ago for his father but dad didnt do alignment or bolt down front mount to boat-there is a metal plate where mounting holes would be-have repair manual for mercs but cant find o/b coupler-another name for this? any & all help greatly appreciated-have worked on cars for 20 yrs-(hobby)-want to learn as much as possible-definitely a challenge :rolleyes: but anxious- Thanks TJ

They may be referring to "gimble bearing".

What size engine do you have? Are you talking about the coupler which is on the flywheel or the engine leveling system which is on the front of the engine or both?

seller said he moved engine forward(picked up) to replace this coupler- transfers power to outboard?is located at rear of engine -showed me approx where it was located-wish I knew more about boats!Thanks for all replies- TJ :confused:

seller also stated it was rubber? said new part is $180 . all help appreciated- ready to try to fix this w / proper advice - TJ :rolleyes:

I Think You're talking about the engine coupler...<br />And it's called an Outdrive, Not outboard....<br />Anyway, The Outdrive should be pulled Off... Then remove the engine.... Mounted on the flywheel is the Coupler....<br />For parts, You'll PROBABLY need,<br />a Coupler..<br />a Gimbal bearing...<br />an Inputshaft....<br />And, Yes, There are Several "Special" Tools needed...<br />Oh Ya, 1 more part to buy..... a Better Manual....

thanks for all replies, i'm taking boat to shop next week for repair-quoted $550 -coupler replace-alignment- purchased repair manual and looks too complicated-any other advice greatly appreciated- thanks again TJ :(
