Hey everyone this is my first post here, though I have been reading this forum non stop for the last week. I just purchased a 1975 Merc 1500 power trim and its giving me considerable greif. At first It would not run above idle, and was near impossible to start, I would have to hand choke the bottom carb. I checked the compression and it seems to be good, all the cylinders read between 115 and 120, I then pulled the fuel line to the carbs and checked to make sure it was pumping which it was, I'm not sure how much it should put out but it seemed to have a decent surging flow. I was told the carbs were freshly rebuilt and they look it. I then checked the timing and found it to be quite off, I adjusted it according to a topic I found on here 2 deg btdc at first pick up on carbs and max of 21 deg. It runs better now but I am unable to get it to idle below 1500 or so, it will stumble and die. The fuel bulb loses firmness not long after start, is it supposed to stay firm? also I was thinking it might need new reeds. I am at my wits end now. If you have any useful information please pass it my way. Thanks guys

I would really like it if someone could give me pointers on setting the carb adjustments.

It is very unlikely the reeds are bad. I suspect the idle stop screw and throttle cable are out of adjustment. Do you have a service manual?

Set idle pickup timing to 4-6*BDTC, max timing to 21*BTDC. Adjust the throttle stop to allow the motor to idle at 1000RPM or a bit less on the flusher.

Idle quality is based upon idle mixture. Make it as rich as possible, to allow good acceleration.

If the primer gets soft, rebuild the fuel pump(s). You may have one or two.
