A friend of mine just bought a 1975 Cruisers boat. He says it needs a lot of work and he plans on fixing it up to get it running. It has a I/O engine. But, he doesn't know what kind of engine it has, Mercruiser, Volvo, etc. Does anyone know anything about this kind of boat or the engine it may have. I personally know nothing about it.

Quick question: With this type of I/O engine, can it be fired up out of the water? Or do you need to have a hose for water hooked up to it? Also, as for gasoline, does it have to be mixed with oil? Like an outboard? I have an outboard engine myself and I dont know if outboards work the same way as I/O's.

If anyone can give me some input that would be great!!

Thanks a lot!

brianmerc

To figure out what engine is in it you will need to post # of cyls, ser#s,any names on the outdrive or ser #s,even the color of the od may give a clue. Most if not all outdrives require water at the outdrive vents so dont try to crank it without water.A marine engine is like a car engine that you dont need to mix oil with the gas.Keep posting!!! I'm going tomorrow to check out the boat. I haven't seen it yet, so when I do see it I'll write down a serial number off the engine.

I'll leave a post tomorrow afternoon with all the info. I'll bring my camera to take pictures too.

Thanks for the fast reply!

brianmerc

Okay, checked out the boat and took some pictures... See the pictures at http://www.jonsbackhoeservice.com/boat

I found out it is a OMC 165hp stern drive engine. Does anyone know where I can find a manual for this engine?

Also, go to that website I posted above and look at the last picture of the outdrive. See where that blue masking tape is? Under that tape, there is a hole that leads to (I'm assuming) somewhere inside the outdrive. I am think it is exhaust maybe? Also, do you think this engine has hydrolics that raises the outdrive in and out of the water?? I'm pretty sure it does, but I don't see any hydrolic looking parts. Take a look and tell me what you think.

Thanks for any input you may have!

brianmerc

I see No Good News for your Bud........
The Best is it's a Chevy 250cid I6 motor... Plenty of those around for parts......

The Outdrive is an other matter......
That's an Old Junk OMC...
NO Hyd. Tilt on that 1... It has a Ele.Mechanical Tilting Mechanizen.... NO Trim... The outdrive can Only be Tilted when Not under Power... The Tilting Power Unit is on the Lower Port side of the outdrive, 1/2 outside the boat,+ 1/2 inside of the boat......
Yes, the Hole under the tape is the Exhaust Relief hole to vent the Exhaust while running at Displacement speeds, or setting still......

No way to know without starting at the beginning.

The outdrive, is all that bondo said, not because it is an OMC stringer, but because it is an electric shift model. However there are still a ton of those still out on the water. It does not look like it has had extensive saltwater use. If so, that is a plus.

On the motor, pull the plugs, use a breaker bar to see if the enging turns freely. Then charge up the battery and do a compression check. Then you need to check fuel system, ignition etc.
Don't run the motor, even shortly, with the outdrive partially up or without water applied.

From the looks of the pics, I hope your friend didn't pay much. That outdrive should be checked by a professional before you would try to use it. Nothing much for a novice to do except the basic. It looks like the tilt motor and or tilt clutch is not working either.

I used to own a gun shop on Arroyo Parkway between 1977 and 1984. Can you still breath down there?

Hey Boomyal,

Thanks for the input. I think my buddy is going to take it to a professional to have him look at it. No, he didn't pay too much for the boat. I think the price was about right. With a little work, I think he can get some good years out of it.

Arroyo Parkway... YES we can still breathe. Ha ha! The pollution isn't that bad. Actually, Pasadena is one of the nicer areas of Southern California, with big huge houses and a lot of history. I wouldn't move anywhere else in the US. We have everything here... lakes, oceans, mountains for snowboarding, deserts, hot girls, etc. It's like Disneyland. Theres always something to do here.

Now I'm curious, where are you living now?

Brian
