 I am to the point now in my restoration project to replace the Impeller and Housing. I have read the section numerous times and I get the impression that I must remove the Upper Gearcase Top, Spur Gear, Worm Gear, True Coarse Gear, Ball Gear Assembly and Shaft, and Drain Oil just so I can remove the housing the Impeller is in after removing the 4 bolts that hold that housing to the Upper Gearcase. Is that about the jest of it or am I reading too much into The Factory Manual?

 The above is of coarse after the Sterndrive and Upper Gearcase is removed which I have already done. Some clarity please!

Having an orientation problem here.

"take bolts out of top and lower unit comes off"

I have removed the Upper Gear Case so what Lower Unit are you referring to? I have at this point already removed the 4 Long Bolts from the Swivel Housing which in the Bottom of the Upper Gearcase. Please Clarify.

then you have it......get that old impeller housing out of there (sometimes they can be very stubborn, and if its been a long time, it will probably come out in pieces) i hope you purchased the whole impeller kit, which includes seals, impeller, and a new housing.

after reading again, it sounds like you havent removed that swivel housing after removing those 4 bolts....if this is the case, its just stuck...use a rubber mallet to pop it off,,,,once off you will see you impeller assembly..

Hi Fendersfender,

Was just getting ready to scan the Swivel Housing out of my manual and post it because I did not think anyone was understanding what I was trying to get off. The Swivel Housing is one stubborn little.... I had hoped it be something like a Mallet to take it off but the Manual was not clear enough to just start Wacking. Is Permatex #2 the only thing that I should use to put those 4 bolts back on with or is there a better Sealer to use nowadays?

I have purchased a complete Impeller Kit. Although the Manual did not suggest complete replacement, I have read enough on this site since January to tell me I should. Thank You for confirming I actually have learned something on this forum!

Just to double check, do I need to disasemble anything on the top of the Upper Gearcase to remove the Swivel Housing?

no, - I just stick a punch or big screwdriver through the exhaust opening (big round hole) - catch the edge of the swivel hsg thing and give her a whack at about a 20 degree angle or whatever to break the permatex.
