Just recently got the boat and everything works except the trim pump only one button works and it leaks likr a siv ive asked the question before and got no response so here it is again will it hurt the boat if i drive it with no trim? Its a 302 mercruiser 888 i just figured i couldnt get top end out of the boat but hen i thought ifi put it in reverse wont the outdrive try to raise up out of the water? And if so is there something i need to do to lock the motor down?

Only harm is if you need to raise the bow for your saftey. Such as bad weather where waves are washing over, a hole or breach in the hull in which you can raise the bow to control the taking on of water. Otherwise you are just going to lack fuel economy but otherwise no harm will be done.

Find a used pump. Be patient, you will find one.

Re: 1975 searay trim pump

Ok so i talked to a boat dealership today and asked him a few questions i had but one i asked was the trim i told him only one button worked and he asked if it was a 3 button system and i told him yeah, he told me he thinks," if he remembers right" that you had to press in 2 buttons at one time to get it to work in one direction i was just wondering if this was right considering only one button worked on the dash but i never tried pushing in 2 at one time and why would it be that way?

Re: 1975 searay trim pump

I have a '77 sea ray and the system should be the same. The three buttons are alligned vertically. They do the following:

Bottom button goes down.

Middle button goes up.

Top button is the "trailer" button, it allows the drive to go higher that it normally would for safe trailering of the boat.

Is the drive all the way down? or up? Where was the leak coming from? Which two buttons make it work?

Do you have a wiring diagram for it, if you dont PM Me and Ill get you one.

Re: 1975 searay trim pump

It was leaking from the pump so i took the pump out and removed the bottom piece and there was a busted o ring sobi replaced that and put it back together, i havent put it back in the boat yet but the bottom button worked on the dash the middle and top did nothing at all, so i jumped a wire from the positive side of the battery to the solenoid and one wire made it click and the other wire i jumped to jus sparked so is it a bad pump, or solenoid? But when i pushed the bottom button the pump would run and you could see the fluid goin thru the lines but the drive didnt move, probably due to the fact there was air in it also. And the drive is all the way down.and theres no force i can raise it and it just falls back down

Re: 1975 searay trim pump

Take a screwdriver and touch both of the large prongs on the solenoid with it hooked up. Does the motor kick in?

If it pumps one way and not the other sounds like the motor is good and you have a wiring problem maybe a solenoid maybe a switch or maybe bad wires between them.

You mentioned a click when you wired the solenoid direct, does it click when you push the up button?

ETA: You will need to get the air out of the system to see if it is holding pressure and the drive will stay up.

Re: 1975 searay trim pump

did you download the manual from the link i posted here??:

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=483970&page=1

in the manual you will find a comprehensive tilt/trim troubleshooting and installation guide with diagrams

BTW you will not be able to properly operate your boat with a leak in the trim system, the drive will kick up in reverse once enough fluid leaks out

yup your right on that one i asked a question would it hurt to drive the boat with no trim and everybody said it wont hurt anything and my other question was wont the motor come up in reverse and nobody posted anythin except it would.be ok well when i.put it on the water i put it in reverse and the boat didnt move so i gave it more throttle and nothing so i looked back there and the drive and prop was out of the water so i had to get off the boat and turn.it around and go and man was it rough riding with no trim
