My recently acquired Wellcraft. The boat is a good project and a solid starting point. Structurally sound a solid original transom, stringers and deck good, cosmetically it is trashed, it need's topside paint, fill about 150 holes, replace all the teak, it's all missing, replace windscreen, new console grab rail it's missing also, rewire entire boat, sand and repaint bottom and repower. I plan on a 3 cylinder OMC 70HP for the power. There is 30 gallon tank under the console. Look's like from the hull s/n this is close to one of the last V-17's produced this is the final year of production.
A few pictures of the boat.

We stripped out the boat in less than a hour, first the boat will be cosmetically fixed. We filled all the holes with Marine-Tex and sanded it down, A lot of the fittings and hardware are badly pitted those will be replaced, Next the entire topside will be sanded and dewaxed in preparation for primer.

It rained most of the day but managed to try to sand the bottom paint from the transom, there is three layers that are very dry and powdery and to my surprise the paint easily sands with 120 grit and the gelcoat looks smooth and shiny, so now we are going to remove all the bottom paint and sand down to 600 grit, compound and polish the gelcoat back, I have a nice Milwaukee variable polisher.

It's been a while but work is progressing, I decided to keep the trailer it's in nice shape no rust anywhere just a few small light surface stuff light sand will take care of it. The trailer is going to get a couple of coats of Rustoleum Royal Blue, extend the bunks by 3 feet and 4 keel rollers and a centering roller on the back and a pair of new hubs. And replace the rotted thru winch post.

It was real hot here today so I started to work on the console it's full of holes, I sanded the entire console so I can start to fill them with Marine-Tex, I also bought 10 bft of new teak lumber to replace all the teak trim that was missing, and Wednesday I bought a 1977 Evinrude 70HP new powerhead 8/08 complete with wiring binnacle control, rebuilt carbs and new waterpump from the dealer that did it. Console after sanding.

Re: 1975 Wellcraft V-17 Fisherman

I decided to replace the deck it had several soft spots. Got in there today it's tropical here, removed half the foam and it came out easy, found more damage the entire center stringer is gone and need to replace 3 feet on the port side stringer and the same where the tray goes for running cables and the rear bulk head bottom 2 inches is marginal. Need advise on wood for the stringers, the center 110x9.5x1 can I use 2 pieces of marine plywood glued or resin and encapsulated in 9oz cloth and resin. And the bulk head I hate to tear it out it only has a very small amount of damage can I just add to it. Something interesting the center stringer at the bow end is attached to a bulkhead only and the bulkhead is not attached to anything and never was, no sign of it ever being glassed. I plan on encapsulating all the new wood, the glass the new stringer with 24 oz mat a single layer. That's what Wellcraft did with the bare wood.

Are you going to keep any of the stringers, some of them look OK. I am working on a imperial, trying to assess the stringer damage, i want to reuse what i can but don't want to take the easy way out and then regret it later. Looks real goo so far.

Nice looking lines on that wellcraft. Is it self bailing? Are you going to raise the floor and add self bailing? New fuel cell in the floor? You gonna do the transom? Raise the transom and add a motor bracket? Coosa board the whole rig? Regel coat the top and bottom?
