Hi all-
My '76 115 hp is dying when shifting into gear and trying to go. This happens in both forward and reverse. I have to 'ease' it in and hold it just right to get it to go. Once it is in gear it runs just fine. Any ideas where to start looking??
Cheers,
KC

It is likely the carbs are dirty or the idle mixture is set incorrectly or some combination of both. Have you done anything to the carbs or motor recently?

Normally we pull up the cold start lever a bit to keep them running and then in one motion, push down the cold start lever, put it into gear and give it some throttle to keep her running in gear.

I have not done anything to it. In fact, I just bought this boat a week ago. It is my first boat too. So, that being said, I want to make sure it is water ready. I have done a lot of reading up on this forum and from the sound of it, I need to check the compression, check spark and possibly clean the carbs replace the plugs and fuel filter. Can you think of any other things that might be worthwhile to check whilst in there?

Cheers-

By cold start lever are you refering to the choke?

Change the gear oil and pump some grease into the zercs. Inspect the motor and boat wiring harnesses for loose insulation and broken conductors. Drop the gearcase and rebuild waterpump. Replace impeller, Orings, gaskets and wear plate.

Check the link and synch on it. First set motor to TDC, measure from top of #1 piston to plug hole. Now back off flywheel (CCW) .464 inch, and see if timing pointer indicates .464. If not adjust it to that mark. Make sure you are accurate. Remove prop

Remove all but #1 spark plug and install all plugs into their wires. Now tape them together and ground all the plug bases. Put a timing light on #1 plug wire. Move throttle to the point when carbs are just ready to open. Timing should be 4-6* BTDC. Now advance throttle all the way. Timing should be 21* BTDC.

That motor should have the backdrag carbs. They had a little screen under the brass fittings in the three carb covers. You might see if they are clean.

Okay so I replaced the plugs, fuel filter and was getting ready to replace the fuel pump when my brother took it out and blew up the reverse gear!! He revved the engine up and slammed it into gear and before I could say a bad word the thing just grinded and revved up to redline.... :( Forward still works fine, but I need to get reverse going again. Should I replace the gear or just junk it and go for a used one on ebay?

Pull it apart and replace the gear AND don't let your brother touch your boat again.
