1976 1150 no spark - odd test results

Hi all,

I followed the CDI test for the 114-2986, and it's confusing me. I hooked up a spark tester between the coil and ground, and I get a light at the coil constantly. Even with the distributor disconnected. Jumping the white and brown and tapping the black wire to ground does nothing.

I checked the voltage at the high tension lead and I'm getting a constant 81v AC.

Any thoughts?

Do you have power on the red and white leads at the switchbox? The red lead should be hot all the time, and the white will get +12VDC when the key is in the run position.

If you have power on the red and white leads, and have disconnected the distributor wires, jumpered the white and brown studs on the switchbox together, and touched the black stud to ground, and no spark at the coil secondary, either your coil is bad or the switchbox is bad.

I ran those tests and it's pointing to a bad coil/box. How can I test the coil?

The really odd part, the part making me think it's the box, is that a spark tester is always lit when it's connected to the coil. That can't be right.

The standard test for an ign coil is to have a few ohms resistance across the primary, and a bunch of resistance from ground to the secondary. I do not have the exact Ohm values handy....

It was the switchbox. A 10 year old CDI one.

The resistance between the old coil and the new were the same.

Thanks again for the advice!
