Hi all,

I have a big problem with my '76 Mercury 1150. Last weekend my brother took it out and slapped it into reverse after revving it up. Before i could say a bad word the gears just stared grinding and the motor revved up real high.

So...now I'm looking for a replacement reverse gear. The forward gear still works and sounds fine. Any advise as to where I can locate some parts and what parts to actually buy??

Cheers,
KC

KC, Get on the crowleymarine.com web site and see what is avail and the price. A used gearcase is about $500, and a gear can be $300 or more, or not avail.

What part of the country are you in? I have a good gearcase that will fit your motor.

I am in southern Indiana, but I would be willing to take a road or plane trip to pick it (if on this side of the country) or pay for shipping..

Where are you located?

Most any inline 4 or 6 gearcase will fit, from the early 70s to the late 80s. The IL 4 may have a different gear ratio

Re: 1976 1150 problems

Hey Chris,

I just wanted to say THANK YOU for all of your helpful advice!!! I brought the boat home this weekend and got to work on it. I rebuilt the carbs, replumbed the fuel line front to back, rewired the engine wiring harness (as much as possible) and link & sync'd it according to your very concise step by step instructions. The engine purrs like a kitten now! I couldn't be happier!!

Now that I got her running properly, I need to get that reverse gear goin. I have not been able to locate a gearcase or reverse gear anywhere locally. How much do you want for yours (if you still have it)?? I would be willing to pay for shipping and all that good stuff. By the way....I ran the serial numbers on my engine and it is a 1974 Mercury 1150.

Regards,
KC
