The motor won't crank. Battery is charged, the motor turns over and with good speed, it has good compression 120psi on each cylinder, has spark but will not crank... if I spray some gas/oil mix in the 1st cylinder it will fire up but then it shuts off.. All Carbs, I believe have gas in them since I pump it in from the gas take pump as the bottom of them are leaking some drips of gas. Can it be the fuel pump? I just bought this boat and motor and this is my first so I'm new to all this. Any Ideas what I should be looking into to fix this problem..
Thanks,
Aaron

How long was this monster dormant? Im gonna step out on a limb and say its time for some carb rebuilding action. If I dont know any thing about a new out board this is on the list of things that gets done before I trust it to bring my tail safely back to the ramp. Also, If your not Positive about the age/condition of your water pump impeller, you should replace it too. After all, just how far can you swim? Not very far anymore in my case:D

I'm familiar with rebuilting the Carb's with carb kits but how do you rebuild a fuel pump?
Thanks for the info,
Aaron

Its easier than the carbs.... just a set of gaskets and some rubber....

One thing to remember when rebuilding the fuel pump is how the 2 small check valves go in.

Mine had the squeeze on hose clamps. I just used small hose clamps when I put it back together.

Great Guys Thanks for the info, I can't wait to get her back into shape. I've heard so many goods things about these motors..
Just to answer how long has the monster been dormat since summer of 05.. picked her up from a fellow who her her on a 17ft bomber ski boat.

I've got a 16ft Dyna Trak 160 bass boat trihull, does anyone have any ideas how fast she'll run on this type of boat?

She also has tilt and trim so does that make a bigger difference?

Well, I'm going to start rebuilding her little by little..
does anyone have a good website to by parts...
I have two websites: mercury express parts & crowley marine
anyothers cheaper than them?

This weekend I'm getting the carb kits, water impeller and fuel pump..is there anything else that I might need?

I checked the lower unit oil also and it was a dark gray color. Is that color bad?

Thanks for the help guys, I really appreciate it especially being new to all this.

Aaron, this site does sell parts.

The one I use regularly is www.boatfix.com

Good prices and they ship promptly. They also have a cross-reference from OEM part numbers to Sierra aftermarket parts.

This site is pretty handy for looking up OEM parts:

http://www.dougrussell.com/partscatalog/collections/index.cfm?fuseaction=collectdetails&colid=01

On the lower unit oil, it could indicate water intrusion. Most likely places on these are the driveshaft oil seals in the water pump base, and the shift shaft bushing assy oil seals.

Change the oil and then check it periodically for further contamination, if so something's leaking.

If you want to do some preventive maint while you are replacing the impeller, you could pull the water pump base and replace the 2 driveshaft seals. In addition to the seals you'll need the pump base O-ring and gasket.

If you have a source of low pressure air you can pressurize the lower unit (12 psi max) thru either the oil vent or drain hole, after draining the oil, to check for leaks. Prepare a soap solution and spray or brush on the (3) shafts' seal areas and any leaks will bubble right up. Sometimes if you turn the shaft a bit or wiggle it to and fro you'll catch a pesky leak that otherwise wouldn't show up.

I would check to make sure there is no water in the fuel. I experienced this problem and I drained the fuel tank, completely filled it and it ran good. I have a 1978 1150 and after replacing the impeller, cleaning the carbs, replacing the fuel lines, new gear lube in the lower unit it ran great. All that only cost around $40 and about 2 hours of my time. Spray a couple cans of carb cleaner while running the motor on the rabbit ears and you will be amazed at how much sludge comes out.

Could be the lubricating oil from the fuel oil mix that your seeing.....use a petroleum based product. Its a little safer for your 2 stroke....
