When I start the motor it idles fine about 900 rpms when I try to put it in gear it dies. I have tried to idle it up but there is no more room to the screw. I have heard about link and synk but don't know if that applies to my motor.

The screw I mentioned is on the arm that moves the stator and adjusts the timeing while throttling up.

What should this motor idle at?

thats the idle speed stop.. you need to do a carb adjustment . go to the engine faq forum and read the post on carb adjusting... this will probably solve your starting problem also keep you post together,it's confusing when you are spread out. it should idle in gear around 700 rpms,, and 850 in neutral.

All of the orifices a/k/a jets on your 1976 115 are fixed. No adjustments.

I have a 1987 merc 115 OB, with an inline 6. I had similar symptoms. It was a bad stator. Have you checked for spark on all plugs?
