Ok I have rebuilt the carbs and replaced all the fuel lines. I have a new line to connect to the fuel tank and a new tank ( 5 gallon portable) and new fuel mixed 50:1.

When I try to start when cold I have to spray fuel into the carbs to get it to start. Then when I stop on the lake for any length of time I have to spray fuel in the carbs or it will not start. If I start withen mabe 5 minutes it will start the first thing.

Thanks for the help.

Yes every time. I try it manually and automatic at the key.

see you other post. if they were together it would have been easier to diagnose.

Re: 1976 115hp johnson starting problems.

Make sure that all of the choke plates close 100% of the way when the switch is activated at the control. This is adjustable by changing the position of the choke solenoid and synchronized by the linkage between the carburetors.

The only way to be absolutely sure that they are closed is to look directly into the throats while someone engages the CHOKE SWITCH at the control. You do not want to allow for any space, and both sets have to be synchronized.:/

When you get a good cold start with a spray bottle and the motor runs fine afterwards, the only conclusion that is commonplace in the 1973-1977 V4 crossflows is that the chokes are not fully closed when attempting to start cold or they would provide adequate fuel mix.

Occasionally there have been instances when the choke would not stay closed while the starter motor was engaging. If you find a situation like that, let us know, please.

Choke plates close all the way. I have stood back and held the plates colsed and it will not start untill i spray fuel in the carbs.

Could this be a fuel pump problem?

With those symptoms, the next most likely problem is an air leak(s) in your fuel system.

Start by a re-torque on your carbs, since you had them off.

BTW, are you sure you are getting good spark?

The nuts are tight and new seals. This was a problem before I rebuilt the carbs so mabe its the fuel pump.

If the fuel pump is not getting good vacuum will this cause my problem?

Re: 1976 115hp johnson starting problems.

Is the gasket between the fuel pump and the motor in good condition and tight so that the pump can work properly? If the motor ran ok once started, I would expect that the fuel pump was working.

If the motor ran but died when put under load I would look at the coils, too. That goes to the earlier spark question.
